Arsenal’s defense may have conceded a late equalizer to share the spoils with City, but did they win in popularity?

All Arsenal defenders and goalkeeper, David Raya, have moved up in the Goalden View Popularity Ranking (GVPR) following one of the most important games of the season against Manchester City. What factors could explain why the entire back line has improved in the ranking this week despite conceding late on?

The game against the reigning champions was a rollercoaster, especially in the first half. Manchester City started well, with Erling Haaland opening the scoring. However, when Rodri came off injured, the tide began to turn in Arsenal’s favour. Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori scored a stunning goal to equalize, and shortly after, another defender, Gabriel Magalhães, found the net for the second game in a row to take the lead. These goals could explain why these two defenders had bigger jumps in the GVPR when compared to their teammates.

With Arsenal seemingly in control of the match, Leonardo Trossard, who was already on a yellow card, let his frustration show when he kicked the ball away after a whistle. This impulsive act resulted in a second yellow, leading to his dismissal and leaving Arsenal with ten men. Despite this setback, a short-handed Arsenal fuelled by the brilliant tactical mind of Mikel Arteta fought valiantly to maintain their lead, holding on strongly against City’s relentless pressure. However, in the dramatic 98th minute, John Stones scruffily found the equalizer from a corner kick in the 98th minute, leaving Arsenal heartbroken after such a hard-fought effort.

While the resilient defensive setup to keep City at bay was a true team effort, it was the defenders who received most of the praise in the GVPR. This recognition is well-deserved, as their contributions were crucial in securing a valuable point against the league title favourites after going a man down. Fans couldn’t help but notice the heroism of the backline as they displayed a masterclass in defending with even the unused defenders receiving recognition as well.

It’s always devastating to give up a lead in the final moments of a game, but perhaps the Arsenal defenders can take pride in their performance both in the match and in this week’s GVPR.
