Onana Popularity Dip

Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana experienced a significant drop in the Goalden View Popularity Ranking (GVPR) this week. Following United’s Europa League clash with Lyon, Onana has slid 8 spots to rank 66th. The Cameroonian keeper had a rough spell both on and off the pitch, and fans and football journalists alike haven’t held back in voicing their criticism.

It all started when Onana made headlines with a controversial statement. He claimed that Premier League giants Manchester United are far superior to Ligue 1 side Lyon, despite having a rocky season to say the least. This comment didn’t sit well with many—least of all Lyon midfielder and former Manchester United player Nemanja Matić.  Matić clapped back with a scathing remark: “When you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history, you need to take care what you’re talking about.” The viral exchange quickly dominated football news and social media.

Costly Mistakes

In terms of performance, Onana had a week to forget. During Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final match, the goalkeeper made two crucial mistakes. One of which occurred in the 94th minute and directly resulted in a goal for Lyon, effectively throwing away the win. Football fans and critics alike flooded forums and platforms, blaming Onana as one of the main reasons Manchester United failed to secure the victory.

Things spiraled further when head coach Ruben Amorim made the bold decision to leave Onana out of the squad entirely for the following league match. According to Sky Sports News, Amorim wants Onana to have a period of rest and clear his head after enduring a difficult stretch both on and off the pitch. Unfortunately for Manchester United, the absence of their first-choice goalkeeper didn’t help. The team suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat to Newcastle, and his replacement, Altay Bayındır, had a performance to forget. Following the match, Bayındır’s popularity tumbled 25 places.
