Now, the impact of his suspension has caused another significant decline, dropping him to 187 this week—a loss of 80 places and 12,097 points. This steep fall in the GVPR has once again brought attention to the inconsistencies in disciplinary actions within football.

Bentancur’s punishment—stemming from his offensive comment toward Son—directly impacted his popularity, reflecting a shift in how he is perceived by the public. His ban has sparked widespread criticism about the fairness and transparency of football’s disciplinary system, amplifying conversations about his popularity ranking fall and prompting comparisons to other players who have not faced similar consequences for similar racially insensitive behavior.

Did Enzo Fernández Get Off Lucky?

Enzo Fernández, whose own controversy dates back to the summer, has been brought back up in public conversation surrounding the latest Bentancur news. However, Fernández has only experienced a minor decline of 1,260 points and a 4-spot drop in the GVPR. Fernández was filmed singing a racist chant following Argentina’s Copa América victory, but unlike Bentancur, he did not face any punishment. This lack of accountability for Fernández’s actions has been highlighted in the wake of Bentancur’s suspension. The sharp contrast between the handling of Bentancur’s and Fernández’s cases by regulatory bodies is also evident in the historical GVPR popularity trendlines, demonstrating that popularity will likely drop at a higher rate should a punishment be handed out.

Interestingly, Son Heung-min, the target of Bentancur’s comments, saw no drastic effect on his current GVPR standing. Son, despite being implicitly involved in the latest off-field controversy, remains firmly within the Top 25 most popular Premier League players this season. Some may have intuitively expected that he would gain popularity this week as fans would rally behind him in support; however, it comes as no surprise that there was no major GVPR movement as the focus was primarily on Bentancur and the FA’s decision.

Bentancur’s latest GVPR drop reflects the intense and rapid impact off-field behavior may have on a player’s popularity. This serves as an excellent example to remind us that words are powerful and the misuse of them can negatively affect a player’s public image and fan engagement significantly.
